Alexandra and Citymad,

Things have never really changed, apart from the way teams line up at the start. In a 4-4-2 formation, with an attack minded coach, as soon as the game gets going, and you have posession, whichever side the ball is going down, the wingback pushes forward into midfield, the two wide midfield players push forward, and the attacking central midfield player should be looking to link up and play off the two frontmen. That brings the whole thing back to exactly what you are looking for, 2-3-5. Nothing has really changed, apart from the way the formation lines up at kick-off.

Mind you, there is too much negativity, especially at the higher levels of the game, as with so much money at stake, coaches are under severe pressure not to lose, at any cost, and that is what is buggering up the game today!!!!
