I would say not a lot of difference despite a full time manager and a substantial increase to the playing budget and these are Facts.
Anyone care to comment.

Black and White Minstral Thanks for the facts which supporters are not always aware of. As you say not much difference with full time manager and more cash.
Where do we go from here!!!

Hi Gamrieloon,
Do the stats that the Minstrel has posted tie up with yours? The main issue is that the points are exactly the same, as the other stats inside these tables are irelevent at the moment. However, it's where and what we achieve by the end of the season that's important, and it's good to get these stats going to use as a monitoring tool to see how we fare. Ther heading of the thread is probably the one to open the dabate a bit wider, and allow the posters to give their opinions on whether we have made progress or not. The stats posted say not, but what does everyone else think? |

Whilst the stats themselves are fairly comparable, I know which team I would rather pay my money to watch. The current squad are at least trying to play
football as I like to see it and we must give Ross Jack time to continue to develop the squad and in particular the local youngsters. After all, hopefully they
are our future first team stars.

Cannot see the present team only scoring 6 goals in next 10 matches nor can I see them only picking up only one point - what do you guys think ? Gamrieloon |

Elgin Dave Which particular local youngsters are you referring to to take us up the league! The under 19 s. As Piraate Mo says lets see where we are at the
end of the season or even January.

Ross Jack is on a long term contract, so lets give him a bit more time before we start this rubbish. We cannot expect overnight success, this is a very new
squad that has the potential to be the best we've seen in our time in the SFL. Let's at least give them a season to show what they are capable of
rather than a quarter of a season. Like Gamrieloon points out, 1 win or 2 draws in the next 10 games beats last season's record, so is a sign of progress
and makes this thread a waste of time. In fact, this thread could be a waste of time by Saturday evening. There's a definite improvement. We may have
conceded 17 goals in 10 games, which isn't great, but in September last season we conceded a total of 11 goals in 2 consecutive games! after losing 6-1 and
5-2 in the space of 7 days!
Interesting that you only include league games in your comparison Minstrel (But of course, with you being a friend of Robbie Williamson, it's not much of a surprise) Jack has already won more cup games than Williamson did at the club and equalled Irvine's effort. |

I think we have made progress with the squad, what I mean is the quality of player at club, also morale within the camp. It seems to me that everyone is
starting to pull in the same direction so that can be put under the progress header aswell. Although we do tend to play too many long balls, when we actually
play on the deck I think we are improving every game.

Mickmanx - my point exactly about playing the ball on the floor. That is what I want to see when I pay my money and take the kids along. It's no good me
telling them to watch the current Arsenal team (that is how football should be played) when what they see locally is the ball lumped forward. The current squad
is already better at playing on the deck than those in the past 3 years. I'm hoping to see further progression this season whilst picking up points at the
same time.

Another way of looking at it... | ||

Okay, here are the starting line-ups for first league games of last season and the current campaign.
2008/09 v Stenhousemuir (0-3): Ridgers, Gilbert (sent off 68), MacKay, Nicolson, Kaczan, Hind, Campbell, O'Donoghue, Shallicker, Crooks, Low (A Trialist, 74). 2009/10 v Montrose (1-1): Gibson, Dempsie (Trialist, 50), Kaczan, David W Craig, David A Craig, Gunn, Macdonald, Edwards, Nicolson, Frizzel, Crooks. By my estimation, there are more players of a better quality at City this year. I have posted below who has replaced who - I know not all could be straight swaps, but it's a rough estimate. Players in bold are the better option, I reckon, while I couldn't decide between those in italics. What do you reckon? Gibson for Ridgers David W Craig for Hind David A Craig for Mackay Edwards for O'Donoghue Frizzell for Low Gunn for Shallicker Ally Macdonald for Campbell Dempsie for Gilbert A better squad this season, I reckon, and a better quality of Third Division player all-in-all. |

1893,
Great point on the cups, as it seems that everyone had skipped over that fact. However, as Highlander said, regardless of who started the thread and their relationship with others, there's nothing wrong with people giving an honest opinion of where they think the club has come so far this season. Everyone has their views, and the one thing that seems to be coming through loud and clear, is that a better brand of football is being played. So far, it looks like everyone is happy with that, and that they will be even more happy if it can be turned into wins. There will always be some who see things differently, but, hey, that's football!!! IOf we all saw it the same way, there would be no "fixed odds" coupons to do, would there? I see Gamrieloon wants to be appointed to the Board as Head of a Selection Committee!!! What a "step back in time" that would be, but it's something that worked well in the sixties, as it was the "Selection Committee" who took all the players to Borough Briggs, and gave them to Innes and George to mould them into a successfull team. Zebra, this is where I need you "Codgers" to come in and back me up on this for the benefit of the "Younger ones"!!!!! Now, let's keep the opinions coming, as it's good to see a cross section of where everyone sees our progress! |

Judderman7 wroteAgreed and that is before you include recent additions Kyle McAuley, Davie Smith, Dave Calder, Jake Inglis and Graham Tatters - all are miles better footballers than what we had last season. Lots for a selection committee to ponder. Gamrieloon

Guys
There is no doubt that we could win more games if we had a bigger, stronger, more physical team who played direct football and lived off the other teams mistakes. If we did that I would be off to watch Lossie because although not always sucessful and with little cash they try to play entertaining, watchable football. Someone mentioned Arsenal earlier on - their bogey team used to be Bolton who bullied them all over the pitch. Still, I would always watch Arsenal, never Bolton, but Arsenal still haven't won anything in recent years. So we need to decide what we want to watch. Do we appreciate the manager and players efforts to play fast footy on the ground, including Frizz with his tricks and Gunny with his improvisation, or do we want to see the ball in the air all the time and hope for play offs. Personally I'd rather stick with the managers approach, using young talented players trying to show the full range of their skills, it might take a few years but will hopefully be sustainable with additions from the 19s. Lets be honest, the top two teams in the land are getting beaten by so called minnows who can really play ,so it would be a backward step for Elgin to go physical over skill. |

But dont forget the other teams are better this season too and we're still second bottom in the league.

This season vs last? Easy! This season would win 4-2 - the game was played on Saturday. Although the league table doesn't lie, I think there is a huge
difference in the last year. Ok, we're getting beat, but we're coming away from games saying we were unlucky, and there is much less of the four and
five nil drubbings. I definitely think we are heading in the right direction. To have a go at RJ for being full time and not making a difference is just a
cheap shot. The players still train in the evenings. Professionally too, the players look fitter, booze is banned from the team bus. I also understand that
loosing Messrs Campbell and McKay has made the dressing room a happier place, and in m opinion, both are no loss.
